Cloutier Cousins
🍁 Zacharie and Xainte (Dupont) Cloutier were among the earliest European settlers of “New France,” making their new home in Château-Richer, Quebec, Canada.
Zacharie was a carpenter in the employ of Samuel de Champlain, founder of Nouveau France (French Canada). The grand patriarch of the Cloutier clan was not able to read or write, thus he made as his “signature” a drawing of a hatchet (see at right).
Zacharie was born in 1590 to Dénis Cloutier and his first wife Renée Brière,¹ and Xainte was five years his junior, the daughter of Paul-Michel and Perrine Dupont and widow of Michel Lermusier. The couple married in Mortagne au Perche in 1616² and emigrated the following year.
